Throughout the social sciences and humanities, there is a continuing
trend toward interdisciplinarity. An important goal of InterActions is
to further, in a careful and coherent way, this process of
cross-fertilization. Within education, there is increasing awareness
both of the connections between the various sub-disciplines in the
field, as well as between education and other fields in the academy.
Likewise, in information studies, scholars have begun to challenge
traditional practices and suggest new and different directions for
research. Currently, work in fields as diverse as legal theory, literary
criticism, design, and technology studies are profoundly impacting
developments in educational and information studies research.
Furthermore, traditionally separate areas of research in information
studies and education, such as sociology, curriculum, policy, and
psychological studies are being connected by researchers in new and
innovative ways. We believe that when perspectives from diverse
traditions are brought together, the interests, power, and
practicability of research are multiplied.
At a time when education and the management of information have again
moved to center stage in public debates, there is a great deal of
controversy over the best purposes, practices, and organization of
educational institutions and information systems at various
institutional levels. Another important goal of InterActions is to offer
a timely and reasoned contribution to these debates.
Our aim is to provide critical commentary on current issues and to
promote perspectives that aid the development of educational projects
and information systems that can serve the cause of social justice. Much
of the public discourse about education and information management is
driven by superficial analysis and misinformation; in this regard, our
goal is to offer a variety of critical interventions that will help to
move discussions of both education and information studies to a more
informed, creative, and politically engaged level.
